Our Approach to Learning
At Our Monkey Club, we believe that children learn best when they are actively engaged in a play-based, child-led environment that supports their natural curiosity and developmental interests. Our approach is designed to provide children with the freedom to explore, experiment, and learn through hands-on experiences that foster their creativity, problem-solving skills, and holistic development.
Our approach at Our Monkey Club is about creating a nurturing, inclusive environment where children are free to explore, learn, and develop in their own unique ways. By focusing on the whole child and fostering a love for learning, we prepare children for success in school and in life.
Process-Focused Curriculum
We emphasize the learning process over specific outcomes. This means that rather than rushing toward a goal, children are encouraged to explore different approaches, make mistakes, and learn through trial and error. This approach fosters resilience, curiosity, and the ability to approach challenges with confidence.
Experience-Expectant Brain Development
Our child-directed approach aligns with how the brain naturally develops. The brain is “experience expectant,” meaning it seeks out sensory and motor input to form strong neural connections. By providing a variety of sensory-rich, exploratory experiences, we support children’s natural drive to learn and grow.
Vertical Grouping
Our mixed-age environment fosters social modelling and empathy. Younger children learn from observing slightly older peers, while older children develop compassion and a sense of responsibility as they help and mentor younger children. This dynamic creates a nurturing and supportive community where all children are valued and can progress at their own pace.
Exploratory Environment
Our learning environment is designed to be flexible and exploratory, offering children the freedom to move between indoor and outdoor play. This allows children to follow their interests, whether they prefer physical, creative, or cognitive activities. The free-flow environment encourages children to pursue activities they are naturally motivated by, which helps them stay focused and engaged.
Well-Being and Learning
We recognize that joy, wonder, and curiosity are essential for effective learning. When children are happy and engaged, their brains enter an optimal state for learning. The positive emotions children experience during play release chemicals like dopamine, which enhance their ability to focus, retain information, and explore new challenges.
Schematic Play
We recognize the importance of schematic play, where children engage in repeated patterns of behaviour that reflect their developmental interests. By identifying these schemas (e.g., transporting, rotating, or enveloping), we can tailor learning experiences to align with children's natural ways of exploring the world, supporting their cognitive and motor development.
The Individual Child
At Our Monkey Club, child-directed learning allows children to take the lead in their learning journey by following their interests. This approach helps foster self-confidence and encourages critical thinking. By personalizing the learning experience to each child's unique needs, we ensure that every child is supported at the right level for their development.
